While scavenging the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.. Director Fede Alvarez explains the rule he set for Alien: Romulus that “if you can be practical, it will be practical," so the cast always acted opposite a physical representation of the xenomorph… Director Fede Alvarez sought out the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. Physical sets, practical creatures and miniatures were used wherever possible to aid further VFX work. When Rain shuts down the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all their blood sprays into the air in long, blurry patterns. Zero gravity in real life causes liquids to form into a sphere rather than spread out in long, flat pieces like in the movie.. Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give him more space.. 20th Century Studios fanfare freezes and it gets sinister, like in Alien 3 (1992), leading to the opening scene of the film. Theme from Alien written by Jerry Goldsmith. Nothing special, many of the really positive reviews are exaggerated. The characters are for the most part completely bland and devoid of any real character except for Andy. I honestly didn’t have any emotional attachment to most of the characters and most of them were just boring and fat. The film was cheesy at times, seemed to take time to get going and relied heavily on Alien franchise clichés to add real color to the plot and script. The special effects were good enough and the design of the original xenomorph was excellent, although the face huggers look worse in this movie than in Alien and Aliens for some reason. Don’t get too excited about the current hype surrounding Romulus, it’s not a terrible movie, but it’s not great either. As a huge fan of the originals, I left disappointed..
